Schoology is a website for teachers, students, and parents. The website is run through the school and a g-mail account. There are two versions of Schoology, one free and one paid for version. The version that costs money is $10 per student and a one time fee. Teachers can create a page to each class and students have their classes assigned to them when they are signed up.Within the account teachers can post to discussions or send out reminders for a class or all classes.
The site is in partnership with google and has no ads on the site but there are suggested apps listed on the side of the page. The apps that are listed are for educational sites or other google partnerships. These ads are school appropriate and the site is created for schools of all levels. Schoology is used in Elementary schools through High Schools. The site can be used just for teachers to send information to parents and grade or can be used to give tests and for assignment submission. This makes it versatile for all grade levels.
Educational Uses of Site
This site allows for the teacher to upload documents, create assignments or tests, and have students submit assignments. As a teacher I can upload a word document or picture or I can create an assignment and attach a document to the assignment. Students have the option to submit an assignment directly into the assignment on Schoology. There is also the option to create a test on the website with open ended, short answer, multiple choice, and matching options. The site will grade most question types for you and export all data you would like to see. Teachers can also import or create a rubric on Schoology and grade students on the rubric in Schoology.
The website has a grade book that can be synced to PowerSchool and gives both parents and students access to look at grades. The Schoology grade book can be synced automatically to your PowerSchool Gradebook and will include the grades and the comments. Schoology gives teachers the option to grade based on standards, which allows for easy mastery based learning grading.
Review of Site
Overall I think this is a very useful site and it gives variety for all subjects to use. As a math teacher I like to see students handwritten work so I can put into Schoology that there is a test on a specific date but I do not have to create the test on the site. I like that there is the option to upload an assignment, such as homework or a project description, for students to download. The students are also able to submit assignments on the website and the teacher can grade right from the assignment. It is really nice that the grade book also syncs to PowerSchool and that the comments carry over. Unfortunately PowerSchool does not sync back to Schoology and the missing/exempt markers only show in PowerSchool. As schools work towards mastery based learning this will not be as much of an issue since Schoology has a standards based grade book as well.
